Is waiting on God for today's New Testament believer? Is it a new age practice? Can we see from scripture what the Lord says about our waiting on Him? Let's take a look...
"My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him." Psalm 62:5
"Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation." Psalm 62:1
"Praise waiteth for thee, 0 God ' in Sion." Psalm 65:1
This word "wait" in these verses is translated from two words that are derived from a Hebrew root word which means "being still" or "being quiet."
The root word means "to be silent. "Wait thou only upon God" signifies "be silent" or "only be silent" before God. We are to be still before Him. "Wait" sometimes means "to cease" or "to stop" whatever action may have been taking place. We need to cease other activities before we come into the presence of God.
Also this word is translated "stand still." In Psalm 37:7 we read: "Rest in the Lord." "Rest" comes from this same word. The instruction is "Be silent before the Lord, or unto the Lord, and wait patiently for Him."
Waiting on the Lord is the setting aside of oneself to focus and meditate on God for renewal of strength and peace. Because of the finished work of the death, burial, and resurrection of and with our Lord Jesus Christ, we need to enter His wonderful rest and consummate the complete work of redemption.
Reasons To be still and wait on the Lord..
The first one is the MOST important. If you, simply want to have more intimacy in your love for your heavenly Father, waiting on the Lord can take you deeper.
If you are spiritually dry, waiting on the Lord can revitalize your spirit. If you long to move more powerfully in the gifts of the Spirit, waiting on the Lord can help you hear God clearer.
If you are looking for fresh vision and direction in life, waiting on the Lord can bring it. If you are hurting inside, waiting on the Lord can ease the pain.
If you are about to start something new and need the Lord's strengthening, waiting on the Lord can refresh you. If you are searching for an answer to a problem/situation, waiting on the Lord can help you find the way.
If you carry responsibilities, waiting on the Lord can lift your burden. If you are trapped by habitual sin, waiting on the Lord can empower you to break free.
If you are having relationship difficulties, waiting on the Lord can give you new resources of grace, patience and love.
There is a deep need in every one of us to be close to God. Experiencing God is something to be sought after and not avoided. While we base our theology on God's Word, our experiences with God make it all come alive.
